A Llama Birth

Wednesday 16th April 2008

06:10AM: Mascara was in the shelter for breakfast as normal. No signs of her being in labor.
07:35AM: Doing poo patrol. Mascara was grazing near Chiquita - no signs of labor
08:50AM: Mascara was sitting down  - didn't seem to be in any discomfort or in labor.
10:10AM: Noticed Mascara was at the poo pile, watched for  a few minutes and thought she might be in labor.
10:20AM: Convinced she was in active labor as she was restless, sitting down and standing up and regularly going to the poo pile. Called Ken and A friend to share the nerve wracking news. Clover was standing close by watching the proceedings, she was obviously midwife for the birth.

10:25AM: Got my camera, binos and phone and went into the paddock. Nose and two legs already presented. Unusually the whole herd decided to come over and check things out. I tried to distract them with some pellets and hay as Mascara didn't appreciate the company although she was happy for Clover and Chiquita to stay close by.

10:35AM: Front legs and crias head fully out, checked no mucus covering the nose. Head was shaking and I could hear breathing.

10:41-10:49AM: Mascara sat down for what seemed like forever. When I went to check I realised that the shoulders had passed, a few more pushes and the cria was on the ground - wriggling. Mascara stood up and was immediately very protective, I risked my life treating getting close enough to treat the umbilical cord. I thought he was a boy but wasn't 100% sure. I and the camera got spat at as did the rest of the herd that had come back over to investigate the new arrival.

Approx 11:00AM: Cria was sitting in the cush position. I called Ken and my friend to let them know all was well.

Approx 11:15AM: Cria was attempting to stand - lots of very unsuccessful attempts.

11:28AM: Cria stood up and promptly fell over.

11:37AM: Placenta passed intact.

Approx 11:50AM: Cria was looking to nurse, Mascara was happy to stand still and encourage him - a successful connection about 10 minutes later.
